When asked to design textiles for the stage or for film they are aware that the colours have to have an added dimension because of the neutralising effect of the lighting. So for film set designers they create fabrics that are ablaze with colour and richness in order to make sure that the detail is not lost. Just as bright colours are worn in sunny climates, so too when designing textiles for the media the brightness of the lighting has to be considered. Venetian opulence needs to have that timelessness of by-gone days. In the same way a fabric that needs to show a rich interior has to be super rich in the shine and colours and printing. If, on the other hand a somber effect is required, then the colours and gloss of the fabric has to be toned down, but not so much as to disappear altogether. It is all a matter of deception and creativity to achieve the effect for which the director is seeking. A coarse fabric does necessarily have to be rough woven, instead it can be printed with the roughness, thus maintaining a comfortable wearing quality. Problems such as allergies to fabrics such as wool can therefore be avoided. Main picture |
